Cal to Compete in First Dual Meet of the Season
BERKELEY- The No. 6 California women's gymnastics team hits the road to open up its Pac-12 schedule this Friday at No. 33 Arizona. The conference dual meet is set to start at 6 p.m. PT at McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona.
Cal (6-0, 0-0) is currently riding one of its best starts in program history taking first place at the Super 16 Presented by Ozone on opening week and following with another quad meet win this past weekend at the Wasatch Classic. The Bears saw their best score in a season-opener in program history notching a 197.475 out in Las Vegas, Nevada and managed to top that mark in West Valley City, Utah with a 197.525.
The Arizona Wildcats (4-2, 0-0) had a slow start to the season taking third place at their opening-weekend quad meet with a score of 194.950. The Ohio State hosted event included the Buckeyes, Kentucky and Greenville. Arizona was quick to bounce back this past weekend taking first place with a 195.875 in its home opener that featured Illinois, Texas Woman's, and UNC Greensboro.
This meet will conclude a three-week road stint to open the season for the Bears as they will finally take to Haas Pavilion next Saturday, Jan. 28 for their home opener with Stanford.
BEARS ON THE AIR
The Bear's Saturday afternoon session will be streamed live on Pac-12 Insider and live scoring will be available on CalBears.com.
LI LEADS THE WAY
Much of the Bears' early season success can be attributed to junior Andi Li. The three-time All-American has not only been consistent, but also dominant with four event wins already and eight podium finishes in just two meets. She took home the all-around title at the Super 16 and placed second at the Wasatch Classic behind only US Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey from Oregon State. In that meet Li posted a career-high 39.675, which is the second-highest score in program history.
LAUZON AND CESARIO TAKE HOME FIRST PAC-12 HONORS OF THE YEAR
Sophomores Mya Lauzon and Ella Cesario took home the first Pac-12 weekly honors of the season Monday afternoon after outstanding performances at the Super 16 Presented by Ozone on opening weekend. Lauzon won the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week Award, while Cesario earned the Coaches Choice Award.
Lauzon got things going in the first rotation on vault as Cal took on the events in Olympic order. Her 9.925 tied her for first place in the session, matched a career-high, and tied for fourth in the nation on opening weekend as one of just ten gymnasts to eclipse the 9.925 mark. She followed with a 9.850 on bars, also tying a career-high and landed tied for seventh in the event. Lauzon wrapped up the afternoon on floor scoring a career-high 9.925, which tied for second in the session and ninth in the nation.
Cesario's story is special. It has been 36 months since she competed in a meet after suffering a knee injury on vault. Saturday afternoon the sophomore made her collegiate debut for the Bears on that very same event and didn't waiver scoring a 9.825, which tied for sixth in the session. Minutes later Cesario was the second Bear to take to the bars and scored a 9.875 that narrowly missed the podium and tied her for fourth in the session.
FRAZIER MAKES SPLASH IN DEBUT
Freshman eMjae Frazier made her collegiate debut in a big way at the Super 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After fighting through adversity in the first two rotations, and even taking a fall on bars, Frazier kept her composure and won the beam and floor title with a 9.950 in both events. Her beam score ties the program record and her floor ties the second-highest mark.
