Hannah Viller Moeller won two championships Tuesday to close the ITA regionals in style.
STANFORD – Hannah Viller Moeller closed the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with a flourish when she captured the singles title and – with
Mao Mushika – the doubles title Tuesday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears defeated teammates
Jessica Alsola and
Katja Wiersholm in the doubles final, after Viller Moeller dispatched the Cardinal's Connie Ma in singles.
Â
All four Bears qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships in November by reaching the doubles final. Viller Moeller also qualified for fall nationals in singles.
Â
"Hannah represents our team very well, but she'll be the first to say, and I feel the same way, too, that we're proud of the performance of the entire team, which bodes well for the season," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "To be the only school with teams still competing here in doubles today was fantastic, and we want to keep building on that. This group is going to be a special one for the Bears."
Â
Viller Moeller, seeded sixth in singles, defeated the third-seeded and 26th-ranked Ma, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6), in a marathon match that lasted about three hours and 20 minutes.
Â
"The singles final today had very high-quality, physical tennis on both sides," Augustus said. "Hannah and Connie really battled back and forth, and it was a very well-fought and well-earned victory that came down to a couple points. Hannah played aggressively when she needed to, but credit to Connie as well for a very exciting, down-to-the-wire final."
Â
Viller Moeller improved to 11-1 in singles this season, with her only loss a 7-5, 7-6(7) setback against Wiersholm in the top-flight final of the Cal Fall Invitational on Oct. 1. Last season, the Copenhagen, Denmark, native had a respectable 24-11 singles record, though she didn't earn her 11th win until Jan. 21.
Â
"My serve has improved since last year," Viller Moeller said. "When I came back from the summer, I worked on it a lot and worked on being more aggressive."
Â
The doubles final followed the singles final, and the Cal senior and Mushika, a freshman, had a daunting task in facing the experienced, top-seeded and ninth-ranked Alsola and Wiersholm, who won the 2022 regional title on The Farm. Viller Moeller and Mushika played for the first time together in the season-opening Cal Fall Invite, with the two winning the top-flight doubles crown in Berkeley. The regional tournament marked the Bears' second time playing together.
Â
But, despite losing the first set, Viller Moeller and Mushika prevailed, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7, to claim the title and close the regional event at Stanford.
Â
"We play very well together," Viller Moeller said. "Mao has a very aggressive game, and we have really good communication and energy together."
Â
Tuesday's doubles victory left Viller Moeller and Mushika with a perfect doubles record this season at 10-0.
Â
"She's the only current Bear that's undefeated in doubles for her career," Augustus said of her freshman. "We've got a really deep team this year in singles and doubles. That's what we need to contend for not only for conference titles but also for national championships. That's what this program is about. We're working hard, and hopefully people will follow the progress of our team wherever we're playing, whether it's in San Diego, at Saint Mary's or in Arizona."
Â
The Bears next compete in the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational from Oct. 27-29 in Moraga. At least four Bears will play in the ITA National Fall Championships, scheduled for Nov. 1-5 in San Diego, while some Bears may play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, set for Nov. 3-5 in Tempe, Arizona.
