No. 35 Cal Heads To San Diego

BERKELEY – The No. 35 California men's tennis team heads to the San Diego area this week to play at No. 30 San Diego on Thursday at 11 a.m. and compete in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship from Thursday through Sunday in La Jolla.
Riding a four-match winning streak, Cal brings a 6-2 record into the nonconference clash at USD's Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros have a 7-3 record. The live stream for the match is available by clicking here and the live stats link is here.
The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is again the host of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, an open tournament that was first held in 1890 in Monterey. The draws for the tournament are located here.
Bears Trounce Dons, Aggies
On a busy Feb. 25, Cal outlasted rain delays to defeat San Francisco, 5-1, in Berkeley and then traveled to Davis to blank UC Davis, 6-0.
At the Hellman Tennis Complex on the morning of Feb. 25, Siddhant Banthia defeated Moritz Hoffmann, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the Bears' win over the Dons. In the afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, Philip Hjorth clinched Cal's victory over the Aggies with a 6-4, 7-6(1) result over Mitchell Davis.
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 35th in Tuesday's ITA Coaches Poll. In last week's ITA singles poll, Ryder Jackson (15-7 record) was ranked 101st and Yuta Kikuchi (7-3) was ranked 106th. The doubles pair of Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck (4-0) was ranked 58th.
Bears' All-Time Record Vs. USD
Cal has a 29-5 advantage in the all-time series with San Diego, including two wins over USD in the teams' most recent meetings in 2012.
Cal defeated USD, 4-0, on Jan. 30, 2012, in the final of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Cal. When Ahmed Ismail beat Victor Pugliese, 6-4, 6-3, he clinched the win over USD and secured a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship for the Bears.
On March 1, 2012, in San Diego, Cal's 94th-ranked Nick Andrews defeated the 63rd-ranked Nikola Bubnic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch a 5-2 win over the Toreros.
Cal Coaches Capture Consolation Crown
In the 2022 edition of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, Kris Kwinta – Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis – and Cal assistant coach Francis Sargeant won the consolation title in La Jolla, beating Bears Sean Hill and Lucas Magnaudet in the final, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Cal duo that made the deepest run in the main draw was Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck, with the Bears advancing to the round of 16.

Cal hosts Columbia on March 13 at 1 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

- Through Feb. 28, Cal has played just one match vs. a Pac-12 school – a 4-3 nonconference win over Stanford on Jan. 20 – while USD has played four such matches
- Ryder Jackson had an impressive fall, reaching the singles final of the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships and competing in singles in the ITA National Fall Championships
- Yuta Kikuchi posted a big win In the Hawaii Invitational on Jan. 9, defeating Duke's fourth-ranked Garrett Johns, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(5)
- In the fall, Kikuchi won his first professional singles title when he took the crown at the Norman Open in Oklahoma; the Japan native also reached the singles final of the KPSF Open in San Francisco
- Sophomore Carl Emil Overbeck has shone in doubles and singles, joining Jackson in the singles semifinals of super regionals and teaming with Kikuchi to repeat as doubles champs in the Battle in the Bay Classic in September
- The duo of sophomore Mikey Wright and freshman John Kim won the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley in October
