CORVALLIS, Ore. – The California softball team played to a 5-5, eight-inning, tie due to a drop-dead time for travel in game three of the series with Oregon State on Sunday at Kelly Field.   Â
The Golden Bears (20-7-1, 2-3-1 Pac-12) were powered by a 2-for-3 day with three RBI from
Kacey Zobac.Â
Oregon State (10-15-1, 1-4-1) got on the scoreboard with a solo home run off the bat of Frankie Hammoude to make it 1-0 after the first inning. Facing Oregon State starter Tarni Stepto for the second time after limiting the Bears to four singles on Friday, the Cal bats broke out in the third.
Kennedy Thomas started the frame with a double and after a
Makena Smith two-out walk, both runners scored on an
Acacia Anders RBI single and a Beaver fielding error. Zobac followed with her third home run of the weekend, a no-doubter way over the fence in center field to make it 4-1 heading to the home half.
OSU got a run back in both the third and fourth frames on RBI hits, forcing Cal to replace starter
Annabel Teperson with
Haylei Archer out of the bullpen with nobody out and runner on second. Archer got out of the frame, stranding the potential game-tying run at third base.
Zobac stayed hot in the fifth with her ninth RBI of the weekend, a stand-up double down the left field line to put Cal in front, 5-3. The Beavers got back within a run again, scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth, but Archer was able to leave the tying run at third again with a strikeout.
Leading 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers tied the game with a two-out RBI single as Cal went to
Sona Halajian in the circle, who got out of a bases loaded jam with a flyout to right.
The game ended in the bottom of the eighth due to the drop-dead travel time with an OSU runner on first base. Â Â Â Â Â Â
