Sophomore Gabriel Jett Takes 500-Yard Freestyle, Anchors Winning 200 Freestyle Relay Team
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Sophomore
Gabriel Jett helped make it a memorable night for the Cal men's swimming & diving team Thursday, winning the 500-yard freestyle and anchoring the 200 freestyle relay which also picked up a victory at the 2023 Pac-12 Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Jett pulled away from the competition to win the 500 free easily in a time of 4:09.66, the second-fastest time in the country this season and the second-best time in the event ever at Cal. He won the race comfortably over teammate
Lucas Henveaux, who still swam the fourth-fastest time in the event at Cal in 4:11.16. Fellow Golden Bear
Patrick Callan placed fourth with the fifth-best time in program history at 4:12.45.
"We have a great distance crew. I'm with them a couple times a week," Jett said on the Pac-12 Network. "We just get after it every week."
Jett brought home the Bears' victory in the 200 free relay after teammates Björn Seeliger,
Jack Alexy and
Destin Lasco established the lead. It marked the seventh time the Bears have won the Pac-12 title in the 200 free relay, and the winning time of 1:15.40 is the fifth-fastest in the country this season.
"We're just zoned in, very serious," Jett said. "We know we have a job to do, and we just go out and do it."
Cal also had a pair of runner-up finishes Thursday, as Hugo Gonzalez blistered to a time of 1:38.72 in the 200 individual medley and Seeliger raced the 50 freestyle in 18.91. Gonzalez's time was the second-fastest in the event in the nation this season and the third-best all-time at Cal.
With two full days remaining at the Pac-12 Championships, the Bears stand in second place in the team standings with 251 points. Arizona State leads at 357.5 points.
Friday's action includes the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
