Bears Host No. 2 Bruins In Pac-12 Opener

BERKELEY – The California softball team opens its Pac-12 slate this weekend with a three-game set against No. 2 UCLA at Levine-Fricke Field.
 
First pitch between the Golden Bears and Bruins is set for 2 p.m. on Friday in the series opener, followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a noon start in the finale on Sunday.

HOW TO FOLLOW SERIES AT A GLANCE
  • UCLA leads the all-time series 99-29-1 and swept the three-game set in Westwood last season.
  • Cal's last win against UCLA came in 2013 (5-1 in 10 inns.) and last series victory came in 2012 in Berkeley, a three-game sweep of the Bruins.

  • Cal is second in the Pac-12 with 32 home runs through 21 games. The Bears are coming off a five-home run outing in the home-opening win over Villanova on Sunday and hit another in Tuesday's midweek win at UC Davis.  
  • The Bears have scored 144 runs during the first month of the season, the fourth-most in the conference.
  • Cal's 73 extra-base hits (32 HR, 37 2B, 4 3B) lead the Pac-12.  
  • Haylei Archer has been stellar in the circle through four weeks of tournament play, going 6-1 with a 1.22 ERA. Archer threw a two-hit shutout against Villanova on Sunday and earned her third save in Tuesday's extra-inning victory over the Aggies.
  • D'Asha Saiki hit the go-ahead home run Tuesday at UC Davis, part of a 2-for-3 day to raise her average to .400.
  • Mika Lee has an eight-game hit streak going with 15 total hits in the eight games, including 10 hits in her last four games. She leads the team with a .417 average.
  • Mika Lee (.417), D'Asha Saiki (.400), Kacey Zobac (.382), Makena Smith (.353), Tianna Bell (.313) and Sophie Medellin (.311) are all hitting above .300 to lead the Bears after the first month.  
  • Returning all-conference players Tatum Anzaldo (.371) and Sona Halajian (.360) are both back in the lineup after missing time this month, but haven't had enough plate appearances to qualify for official stats.
