Drake Callender Called Up To USMNT
BERKELEY – California men's soccer alumnus
Drake Callender earned a call up to the U.S. National Team for its April 19 game vs. Mexico in the inaugural Allstate Continental Clásico, U.S. Soccer announced on Wednesday.
Â
This is the first selection to the senior national team for the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who previously was chosen for U.S. Under-23 National Team training camps in 2019 and 2021. Callender is one of three goalies on the 23-player roster for the USMNT, which will face its CONCACAF rival at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, in one week.
Â
The starter in goal for Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer, Callender played for the Golden Bears from 2016-19. He was named to three All-Pac-12 teams and three United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region teams as a collegian.
Â
Callender, who has played every minute in goal for Inter Miami through seven games this season, leads MLS in saves with 33 and ranks in the league's top 10 with an 80.5% save percentage.
Â
On Monday, Callender was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for the third time this season, after he made seven saves against FC Dallas on Saturday. Callender was also named to the TOTM three times in the 2022 season, when he was a candidate for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Â
The Fair Oaks product is one of four erstwhile Cal goalkeepers – including Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders), David Bingham (Portland Timbers) and Jonathan Klinsmann (Los Angeles Galaxy) – currently competing in MLS.
