Bears Continue Postseason Run In Moraga On Saturday
BERKELEY – California rugby will face Saint Mary's College in the West Region Quarterfinals of the 2023 D1A National Collegiate Championships on Saturday. The Golden Bears and the Gaels will kick off at 1 p.m. PT at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga. Fans can purchase tickets at the gate, or watch the match live on The Rugby Network.
The Bears, who are the No. 3 seed in the west region, opened their postseason campaign last weekend with a decisive 82-15 win over sixth-seeded Cal Poly. Cal put up 14 tries by 10 different players, including two apiece from senior Max Clark, junior Tom Dixon, sophomore Joe Kirsten and freshman Rand Santos.
The Bears and the Gaels last met on March 25 in Berkeley, a contest that was originally scheduled to take place in Moraga but was moved to Witter Rugby Field due to poor playing conditions on the Saint Mary's pitch. The Bears led the game after 60 minutes had passed, but some untimely penalties worked against them and the Gaels came out on top 38-34 in the end.
Saint Mary's compiled a 13-3 record in spring XVs action to earn the No. 2 seed in the west region. This will be the Gaels' first postseason outing after receiving a bye in the first round. Notable fixtures for Saint Mary's this season included a narrow 23-18 win over No. 4 seed BYU and a 29-26 loss to top-seeded Central Washington.
Cal will field a similar first XV to last weekend's first round match, with Max Schumacher once again at the helm as the squad's captain. The senior is Cal's leading points-scorer this season with his 101 points amassed between tries and conversion kicks.
Schumacher's backline is expected to once again feature last weekend's multi-try scorers Clark, Santos and Kirsten. Freshman Solomon Williams is also likely to retain his starting position as the scrumhalf, which he played last weekend against the Mustangs and in the regular-season finale against the Gaels.
In the forward pack, the front row should also remain unchanged, with juniors Emilio Shea and Charlie Walsh as props and freshman Cade Crist at hooker. Dixon is also expected to keep his starting position as a lock. He has made 12 starts this season, which is more than any other Cal player. Standout backrower Alex Aguero is also likely to feature as the Bears' No. 8 once again.
