DAVIS – The Cal lacrosse team closed out both its regular-season road and non-conference schedules with a 17-12 victory over UC Davis (7-5) at UC Davis Health Stadium on Saturday.
Maya Lawliss,
Kennedy Mason, and
Amanda Morse each had a hat trick in the contest, while Morse added a pair of assists for a game-high five points.
Josie Lillquist,
Quinnlyn Mason, and
Mya Wang had two goals each with Mason and Wang also picking up an assist.
Courtney Wong and
Isabel King each had one goal with Wong adding an assist.
Kennedy Goss became the Golden Bears' all-time leader in draw controls and picked up a season-high tying eight on Saturday to help stake Cal to a 20-13 advantage in the category. Goss moved past former school draw controls leader LizaBanks Campagna (178, 2018-21) and now has 185 in her career. The 20 draw controls were a season-high for the Bears.
Cal jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the contest and was still ahead 6-3 after the opening period. The Bears scored the first goal of the second period to go up 7-3 but UC Davis would get five of the final six in the second to tie the score at 8-8 going into the break. The Aggies scored two of the first three goals in the third quarter to twice take one-goal leads but Cal answered the second single-goal advantage by reeling off six consecutive goals to take a 15-10 leading heading into the final period. UC Davis started the fourth-quarter scoring, but Morse answered 2:38 later to help the Bears maintain their four-goal lead.
Kennedy Mason traded goals with Lily Manos of the Aggies in the game's final two minutes.
"Today, we executed on offense, defense, transition, and most importantly, draws," head coach
Jennifer Wong said. "The team implemented our game plan and made important adjustments throughout the game. We've been making progress all season, and it came together today. I'm really proud of the team for its effort and am happy that they will get to enjoy this win."
Cal (4-10, 1-6 Pac-12) returns home and to Pac-12 action to play its final three regular-season contests in Berkeley beginning with Oregon on Friday, April 21 (3 pm PDT). The Bears will also welcome Colorado (Saturday, April 23, 1 pm) and Stanford (Friday, April 28, 3 pm) to Berkeley to conclude the regular season before hosting the Pac-12 Championship for the first time May 3-6.
