STANFORD, Calif. – The California softball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to No. 8 Stanford in game three of the Big Series on Sunday at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
Tatum Anzaldo went 2-for-4 and
Makena Smith recorded an RBI double for the Golden Bears (30-14-1, 7-10-1 Pac-12). Kyra Chan led the Cardinal (34-10, 10-8 Pac-12) with a 2-for-2 day.
Facing Stanford ace NiJaree Canady for the second time in the series, the Bears got a hit much earlier than on Friday night. Cal wasn't able to put anything on the board until the sixth in the opener but Anzaldo started the game with a single to center before being stranded on Sunday.
Battling the pitcher with the best ERA in the country at 0.21 coming into the game, Cal broke through in the third with the bat of Smith.
Acacia Anders drew a two-out walk and Smith made her pay with the double off the wall in right to make it 1-0 Bears. It was just the third run Canady allowed this season and second of the series.
Stanford tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a bases-loaded RBI walk but Cal starter
Haylei Archer got out of the jam with a popup. Still knotted in the fifth, Smith reached on an error at second base and
Diamond Holland raced home after a single off of Cardinal reliever Alana Vawter to retake the 2-1 lead for Cal.
Archer ran into trouble in the home sixth, starting the inning with a hit by pitch and a single as Cal went to
Annabel Teperson out of the bullpen with two on and nobody out. The Cardinal plated two runs on another bases-loaded free pass and a sacrifice fly to take their first lead of the day 3-2.
The Bears tried to rally in the seventh with Anzaldo starting it on a one-out laced single up the middle. Smith and
Kacey Zobac walked to load the bases with two down but a groundout ended the game with the tying run at third base.
