Knott Wins Two Events With Personal Bests
BERKELEY – California track & field kicked off the first of three days of competition on Thursday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, completing five events in the men's decathlon and four in the women's heptathlon at a sometimes-sunny, sometimes-chilly Edwards Stadium.
Currently, Oregon's Nathan Poff stands atop the decathlon standings at 3672 points, while the Ducks' Colleen Uzoekwe leads the way in the heptathlon with 3541 points.
Senior
Cole Whatley ended the day just 26 points behind Poff, remaining consistent through the first five events to accumulate 3646 points. He led all Cal competitors in the shot put with his second-place mark of 12.48m (40-11.5) and also leaped to a second-place 6.82m (22-4.5) in the long jump. Sophomore
Riley Knott, who currently stands in third with a five-event point total of 3532 points, posted wins in both the long jump (6.91m/22-8) and the high jump (2.02m/6-7.5), each a personal best. Freshman
Seth Johnson was the top Cal finisher in the 100m, crossing the finish line in 11.27 and taking third place in the event; senior
Jono Pelusi later posted a third-place finish of his own with a 400m time of 50.57.
Two women donned the Blue & Gold on Friday, competing in their first outdoor heptathlons for Cal. Sophomore
Yuki Hamachi and freshman
Torre Anderson each recorded personal bests in the 100m hurdles with identical times of 14.77; Hamachi also won her heat by an impressive 1.83 seconds to start off the afternoon. Anderson, who currently ranks fourth with a total of 2898 points, paced Cal in the high jump (1.58m/5-2.25), the shot put (9.94m/32-7.5) and the 200m (26.11).
