Bears Erupt For 16 Runs In Win Over Cougars

Cal Clubs Eight Extra-Base Hits

BERKELEY – Runs were abundant as both sides provided plenty of offense Saturday. In the end, the Cal baseball team made more noise as the Golden Bears defeated Washington State 16-10 to even up the series a game apiece.

Cal (22-24, 10-16 Pac-12) matched season highs in runs scored and extra-base hits. The Bears also scored 16 in the win over Ohio State on Mar. 4. Every Cal batter recorded at least one hit with Dom Souto leading all players with four hits. He finished the day 4-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. It is Souto's 13th multi-hit game this season, but first career four-hit game. Max Handron remains red-hot, he went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Rodney Green Jr., Carson Crawford, and Jack Johnston all hit home runs and all three drove in three runs. Kade Kretzschmar went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Washington State (28-20, 9-16 Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead once again, scoring three runs in the first two innings. The Cougars finished the afternoon with 10 runs on 15 hits, a five-run seventh inning made the Cal faithful uneasy as it cut the deficit to five runs. Five WSU players collected multiple hits, Jake Harvey went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Cougars.

The Cougars scored a run in the first and two in the second and were on the verge of jumping out to a big lead. Cal starter Paulshawn Pasqualotto (4-1) weathered the storm, getting a ground ball to begin a crucial double play in the first. In the second Johnston made a terrific diving catch to end the threat in the second. WSU was just 3-for-11 with one RBI in two-out at-bats. Cal was much better, going 5-for-10 with eight runs driven in with two outs.

Cal's offense responded by scoring two in the second but erupted in the third scoring seven runs. The big hit was a three-run blast by Green Jr. that gave the Bears the lead for good, putting them out front 5-4. It was the 13th home run of the year for Green Jr. The run-scoring frenzy continued with an RBI single from Souto and a three-run blast from Johnston, his fourth of the year.

The home run to Green Jr. ended the day for WSU starter Grant Taylor (3-4). Taylor allowed six hits, and five runs (four earned) with a walk in two innings of work. Washington State's bullpen did not fare much better. McKabe Cottrell lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs all earned. Duke Brotherton surrendered two runs in 2.1 innings. Cam Liss and Andrew Baughn also allowed runs.

Pasqualotto threw up zeros in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. He retired seven of the nine last batters he faced getting a fly ball to center to end the sixth. Pasqualotto tossed six complete, scattering nine hits, four runs (three earned) with three walks and four strikeouts to match his win total from his Freshman All-American season.

In the top of the seventh with Cal enjoying a 14-4 advantage, Austin Turkington struggled. The dependable freshman faced six batters, surrendering hits to three and hitting the other three, allowing five runs.

Tyler Stasiowski came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs and got the Bears back into the dugout. He earned his second save of the year going the final three innings, scattering three hits and an unearned run.
