SANTA CLARA – Cal scored a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to one but Santa Clara responded scoring two in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the game away, winning 8-1 on Tuesday evening at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Cal (18-23) got a two-hit performance from
Max Handron. He also had the lone RBI of the evening for the Golden Bears.
Nathan Manning,
Rodney Green Jr., and
Kade Kretzschmar also had a hit. The hit for Manning was his 16
th in the last 10 games.
Andres Galan (3-2) got the start for the Bears and needed just 24 pitches to retire the first six batters in order, which included three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the third Santa Clara (24-15) broke the scoreless tie. Eammon Lance led off the inning with a double. Galan allowed an infield single and hit a batter to load the bases for Michael O'Hara who lined a single to left center to score a pair. After loading up the bases a second time, Galan got out of the jam getting two more strikeouts.
Galan's final line was three complete, three hits, two runs a walk, and five strikeouts.
The two runs allowed by Galan were all Broncos' starter Caden Wooster (1-0) would need. He tossed five complete, scattering five hits with a walk, while striking out a career-high.
The Broncos finished the evening with nine hits and were 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position. O'Hara and Lance combined for three hits apiece. O'Hara had four RBIs and a triple, while Lance had two doubles and scored three runs.
Cal scored their lone run in the top of the sixth. The two-out rally started when
Carson Crawford was hit on the foot.
Nico Button and
Dom Souto loaded the bases via a walk and a second hit batsman. Handron got the Bears on the board drawing a four-pitch walk to score Crawford.
