Cal Returns To Pac-12 Play With 3-Game Series At UCLA

BERKELEY – The California baseball team travels to Southern California this weekend for a Pac-12 showdown with UCLA. The three-game series between the Golden Bears and the Bruins will begin Friday at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. All three games will be streamed on the UCLA Live Stream and fans can also follow along via live stats at Stabroadcast.com.
 
Cal (18-23, 6-15 Pac-12) is coming off a loss at Santa Clara on Tuesday night. The Bears are currently in 11th in the Pac-12 standings but are just a game back of leapfrogging Utah and Washington State for a spot in the top nine for the Pac-12 Championships. UCLA (24-16-1, 10-9-1 Pac-12) is currently in sixth in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins are coming off a 12-3 loss at the hands of UC Irvine on Tuesday night and have gone 3-7 over their last 10 contests.

QUICK HITS
  • The Bears enter this week with an overall record of 18-23, on the road they are 7-12.
  • Friday's game against the Bruins will be game six of a season-long eight-game road trip. Cal will return home the following week when it hosts Washington State for a crucial three-game series. 
  • Kade Kretzschmar was named the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy Player of the Month for the month of April. Kretzschmar hit .426 in April (36-for-78) with seven doubles, a triple and eight home runs. He had 12 multi-hit games in April which was tied for the most in the Pac-12.   
  • Nathan Manning has stayed hot and has seen his average climb to .346 (18-for-52) for the year. Over the last 10 games, Manning has collected 13 of his 18 hits and has a .429 on-base percentage.
  • Over the last 10 contests, Cal is hitting .282 as a team with Kretzschmar (.415), Dom Souto (.400), Caleb Lomavita (.372) and Manning (.351) all hitting over .350. Cal is averaging 6.3 runs per contest in those 10 games.
  • Kretzschmar's 11 home runs currently rank seventh most in the Pac-12. Cal has hit 54 home runs on the year with eight players hitting two or more home runs. Joey Donnelly became the 11th Bear to hit a home run this season when he hit his first career home run against Pitt on April 28.
  • Saturday starter Paulshawn Pasqualotto has been terrific in his return from injury this season. He is 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA. His ERA is tied for 10th best in the Pac-12. He is holding opponents to a .213 batting average, which ranks fifth best in the Pac-12. Last time out, he matched his career high with six strikeouts.  
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday will be the 370th meeting between the Bears and Bruins. UCLA owns a 187-182 advantage in the all-time series. Under head coach Mike Neu, Cal is 7-9. Cal went 2-5 against the Bruins last year, meeting twice in the Pac-12 Tournament. Last time out, UCLA defeated Cal 9-7 in 10 innings at the Pac-12 Tournament on May 27, 2022. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bears return home for a three-game series against Washington State. Game one of the series is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday. All three games against the Cougars will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream.
