Ten Bears Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors
All Will Advance To Academic All-America Ballot
The California track & field and cross country teams have 10 representatives – five men and five women – on the 2023 College Sports Communicators Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-District Teams, as announced by the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) on Wednesday. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.
The 10 Academic All-District honorees from Cal are as follows:
Ethan Bersley: Chemical Engineering/MSE major; reached the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships in two straight years; two-time recipient of Cal's Golden Bear Award for having the highest GPA on the team (men's cross country); five-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll honoree
Carrick Denker: Business Administration major; reached the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships in two straight years; five-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll honoree
Michael Gupta: Computer Science major; owns the 10th-farthest hammer throw in Cal history and has advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in two straight years; two-time recipient of Cal's Golden Bear Award for having the highest GPA on the team (men's track & field); 2022 USTFCCCA All-Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District; four-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll honoree
Jono Pelusi: Master of Translational Medicine; competes for a Cal decathlon squad that ranks third in the nation; owns The Podium facility record for the heptathlon 1000m
Cole Whatley: Master of Engineering; competes for a Cal decathlon squad that ranks third in the nation; owns the 6th-best indoor heptathlon in program history
Kylie Hilton: Master of Public Health; appears at No. 7 (outdoor) and No. 8 (indoor) on Cal's all-time pole vault lists; 2023 West Preliminary qualifier and 2022 NEICAAA pole vault champion
Anna Purchase: Master of Arts; owns Cal's second-farthest hammer throw in history and is the No. 2 woman in Great Britain history; two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic; 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-District; three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll honoree
Kalinda Reynolds: Spanish and Portuguese major; appeared in the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships in two straight years; earned the Golden Bear Award for having the highest GPA on the team (women's cross country); five-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll honoree
Rebecca Tomann: Chemistry Ph.D; part of a Cal hammer throw squad that ranks fourth in the nation; two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic; 2023 Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll honoree
Ijeoma Uche: Master of Public Health; NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier (long jump); ranks sixth on Cal's outdoor long jump and 10th on its indoor long jump all-time lists; owns the Brown University indoor long jump record and its No. 2 outdoor long jump entry; co-founder of Birth By Us, an app that supports Black maternal health
All 10 Golden Bears have advanced to the Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted on by CSC members. The CSC will announce Academic All-America teams for the women on June 28 and the men on June 29.
