BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team took a 2-0 lead over 10-man Oregon State in Thursday's Pac-12 Conference opener at Edwards Stadium, before the Beavers scored in each half to tie the Golden Bears, 2-2.
Â
Cal's record is now 3-1-3 (0-0-1 Pac-12). Oregon State – which played a man down after Nicklas Lund was red carded in the 12th minute – is 3-2-1 (0-0-1).
Â
Lund's infraction – fouling
Rohan McEligot in the penalty area – led to a Cal penalty kick, which senior midfielder
Juan Martinez converted to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The goal was Martinez's second of the year.
Â
Cal continued to apply pressure in the attacking third, with the Bears' second goal coming after they won a corner kick in the 14th minute. Oregon State cleared the ball only as far as Cal's
Adrian Guzman, whose ensuing shot deflected to teammate
Wyatt Meyer, whose shot
Arik Duncan redirected past goalkeeper Luis Castillo and into the net. The Bears led 2-0Â thanks to Duncan's second goal as a Bear.
Â
In the 36th minute, the Beavers pulled a goal back when Logan Farrington's shot was saved by goalkeeper
Connor Lambe – who transferred to Cal from Oregon State in the offseason – and Dante Williams pounced on the rebound to score.
Â
Farrington – off assists from Williams and Fran Cortijo – scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute.
Â
The Bears turned up the intensity the rest of the way, outshooting the Beavers 7-1. Cal's last two best chances to score came in the 87th minute, when forward
Nonso Adimabua blasted a shot from 20 yards that Castillo saved. McEligot was quick to the ball, but Castillo saved his close-range shot, and the teams eventually settled for the 2-2 draw.
Lambe made four saves against the Beavers.
Â
"Disappointed not to come out with the win in the Pac-12 opener here at home," Cal head coach
Leonard Griffin said. "But credit to Oregon State. They fought and battled even a man down. You often see in soccer the team that's a man down, up against the wall, finds a way to dig themselves out of a hole, and they did just that. It was a hard-fought game; very intense until the final whistle."
