BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team won a combined 15 singles and doubles matches as its Cal Winter Invitational came to an end Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
 
The Golden Bears captured eight wins in singles and seven victories in doubles. In singles, Valentina Ivanov and Katja Wiersholm collected quality results over ranked USC opponents on a dry and relatively warm, winter day, which contrasted with Saturday, when the tournament's matches were rained out. Wiersholm, ranked 36th, defeated the 83rd-ranked Eryn Cayetano, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while Ivanov beat the 22nd-ranked Emma Charney, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. Four Bears finished the Cal Winter Invitational with 2-0 records, including Ivanov, Wiersholm, Mao Mushika – who beat Cal Poly's Peyton Dunkle, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday – and Lan Mi, who defeated USC's Makenna Koenig, 6-1, 6-2, on the tournament's last day.
 
In doubles, Cal's top-ranked duo of Hannah Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika – who are ranked 14th – beat USC's Snow Han and Naomi Cheong, 6-4, and bested the Saint Mary's pair of Iman Khan and Olivia Rook, 6-1, to improve the twosome's record to 2-1 at the Cal Winter Invite.
 
"We're excited to get this tournament in," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We didn't get three days, but we got two days, and that's two more days than last year when we were fully rained out. It was great to get some extra doubles matches today along with singles. It was good to get our new players back out on the courts and get Val back out on Hellman, though she knows her way around here. We had a lot of ranked wins this weekend in singles and doubles. I'm really pleased to come back to play at home, though there definitely was a temperature change from our previous tournament in Hawaii. It was a good weekend overall.
 
"We don't play at home for a while, but hopefully the next time we are at Hellman people will come out and watch. We have a really strong team this year, and it's free, so bring friends and come support Cal women's tennis."
 
Cal starts the dual-match portion of its season when the 19th-ranked Bears compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend from Jan. 27-28 at Oklahoma. The winner of the four-team event advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, slated for Feb. 9-12 in Seattle. The Bears next play at the Hellman Tennis Complex when they host UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 25.
