3 Bears Post Program Top 10s
Jacobs, Coleman, Shaw Etch Names In Cal Record Book
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field started off its indoor campaign in strong fashion, posting five top-three finishes as well as three program top-10 entries on the first day of the New Mexico Team Open.
Two of those top marks came in the women's weight throw, courtesy of sophomore
Audrey Jacobs and freshman
Adrianna Coleman. Jacobs shattered her old personal best by nearly a meter and a half, posting a third-place toss of 18.64m (61-1.75) for the seventh-best throw in program history, while Coleman's fourth-place attempt sailed 18.14m (59-6.25) for Cal's No. 10 all-time mark in her collegiate debut. Fellow freshman
Angie Schykerynec also reached the weight throw final, placing sixth at 17.95m (58-10.75); were it not for Jacobs and Coleman re-setting the list, her performance would have also made it into Cal's top 10.
On the track, junior
Isaiah Shaw finished third in the men's unseeded 400m with a time of 47.59 – a 1.27-second improvement on his old personal record to move all the way up to No. 4 in program history. Shaw is slated to compete again tomorrow in the 4x400m relay, an event in which he is already a co-holder of the indoor school record.
In addition to Jacobs and Shaw, three other Golden Bears finished in the top three of their respective events. Redshirt junior
Paige Martin was Cal's lone representative in the "B" section of the women's pole vault, acquitting herself well with a personal-best 3.85m (12-7.5) to finish in second place. In the men's high jump, junior
Riley Knott cleared 2.09m (6-10.25) for a second-place PR of his own, while redshirt senior
Mason Mangum won his flight and took third overall in the men's long jump at 7.51m (24-7.75). Mangum's finish was the best of four Bears who made the long jump final, the others being sophomore
Jason Plumb (fifth place, 7.44m/24-5), freshman
Chukwunonso Udeh (sixth place, 7.38m/24-2.5) and freshman
Obi Nwafor (ninth place, 7.02m/23-0.5).
Two additional returning Bears – sophomores
Torre Anderson (long jump – 5.62m/18-5.25) and
Jayden Hill (unseeded 400m – 57.27) added their names to the PR list, while freshman
Ashanti Elie tied for first in her high jump flight with a debut mark of 1.65m (5-5).
