Three Bears Place First On Opening Day

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 1 men's swimming & diving team opened the two-day tri-meet against No. 6 Arizona State and No. 9 Stanford with a trio of first-place finishes in Tempe, Ariz.
 
The Golden Bears began the night with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The A lineup of graduate student Bjorn Seeliger, freshman Yamato Okadome, graduate student Dare Rose and senior Jack Alexy finished in a time of 1:23.53. Cal's B lineup of senior Kai Crews, junior Luca Pusateri Gissendaner, sophomore Samuel Quarles and freshman Lucca Battaglini placed sixth with a time of 1:26.50.
 
Junior Matthew Chai was the Bear's top finisher in the 1000-yard freestyle after placing sixth with a time of 9:01.54. Graduate student Tyler Kopp finished in eighth with a time of 9:07.77.
 
Senior Gabriel Jett was the first Bear to claim a victory on the night after touching first in the 200-yard freestyle with the third-fastest time in the nation this season (1:32.21). Senior Robin Hanson placed fifth with a time of 1:34.07.
 
In their season debut, Junior Joshua Thai took home first-place honors in the three-meter dive with a score of 343.80, while sophomore Jack Clark finished third with a 327.15 score.
 
Okadome finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 52.47.
 
Alexy touched first with the third-fastest time in the nation of the season in the 100-yard freestyle (41.87).
 
Sophomore Humberto Najera placed third in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:49.70, while Thai and Clark took third and fourth in the one-meter dive with scores of 295.70 and 295.15, respectively.
 
The Bears ended the night in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the A lineup of Alexy, Seeliger, Graduate student Matthew Jensen and Jett earned a second-place finish with a time of 2:49.92. Cal's B lineup of Hanson, freshman Nans Mazellier, Rose and Battaglini finished fifth in a time of 2:54.22.
 
Cal will complete the two-day tri-meet against Arizona State and Stanford tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT.
