Marco Brougher Named Academic All-American
California men's soccer goalkeeper
Marco Brougher was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Second Team, CSC announced Tuesday. The accolade caps a career year for the Golden Bear junior, who led the ACC in saves per game and ranked in the top 10 of several other categories in Cal's first season in the conference.
Â
A mechanical engineering major who was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team in November, Brougher boasts a 3.60 grade-point average. He became Cal's starter in goal in 2024, playing in all 18 games, starting 17 and ranking second at Cal in minutes played with 1,503. Brougher also ranked second in saves (61), third in save percentage (.735), fifth in shutouts (5), sixth in shutouts per game (.28) and ninth in goals-against average (1.32) in the 15-team ACC.
Â
One of his five shutouts came during the regular season in Cal's 1-0 upset at then-No. 1 Pitt, with the Los Altos Hills product making a career-high seven saves to safeguard the victory. What was arguably his best performance as a collegian earned Brougher the ACC Defensive Player of the Week award and a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. He earned the Top Drawer Soccer achievement a second time after he made five saves in a 1-0 shutout at then-No. 2 Duke in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
Â
Brougher is Cal's second consecutive Academic All-American, with
Wyatt Meyer honored in 2023. Alumni Aravind Sivakumar (2017) and Andrew Wiedeman (2009) also collected Academic All-America laurels.
Â
A student-athlete must compile at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and compete in 90% of the institution's games or must start in at least 66% of the institution's games – and be named to a CSC Academic All-District Team – to be eligible for the CSC Academic All-America Teams.
