MISSION BAY – The No. 7 California women's rowing team concluded the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay with the 3V8+ taking home the Carley Copley Cup finishing ahead of No. 3 Washington and No. 4 Texas, while V8+, 2V8+ and V4+ all finished in the top three of their respective finals on Sunday morning.

In the final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the V8+ jumped out ahead with Texas and Washington in the lead pack. Cal and Texas separated themselves after the first 500 meters. The Longhorns were able to build a six-seat lead by the midway mark while the Bears had an open water lead over Washington. Cal was unable to catch Texas over the last 500 meters and finished in second place in a time of 6:30.093.

In the final of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, the V4+ jumped out with the lead pack along with Texas and Washington. The Bears sat in the third position after 500 meters but were able to maintain contact with Texas and Washington. The Longhorns were able to separate themselves over the third 500 meters and the Bears walked Washington all the way back to take over second place and eventually took an open-water lead heading into the finish with a time of 7:36.483 for second place.

In the final of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, the 2V8+ jumped out with the lead pack along Texas and Washington and had a two-seat lead over Texas through the first 500 meters. The Longhorns were able to walk back Cal and overtake the lead by three seats halfway through the race. Over the second half of the race, Washington overtook Cal for second place and was able to hold off the Bears in the final 250 meters as Cal finished in third in a time of 6:57.247.

In the final of the Carley Copley Cup, the 3V8+ got out with the lead pack along with Washington and Texas in the first 10 strokes before the Bears built a half-boat lead over Texas by the halfway mark of the race. The Longhorns rallied over the last 250 meters but were unable to catch the Bears who finished in first with a time of 7:00.417.

"Although we would have liked to have come away from this weekend with more than one win, I think the team showed that we have the capability of putting three boats in the A level finals at NCAAs," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "Obviously, we need to continue to improve, and we have a short week of training ahead, so we'll need to make the most of it. Ultimately, it was a good opening weekend and it was great to see the 3V end the weekend with the win. We're looking forward to heading east next weekend and lining it up with Syracuse, Virginia, and Ohio State."
