Bears Go For Third Straight Title
BERKELEY – The No. 4 California men's rowing team will look for its third straight conference title and 18th overall as it prepares to compete at the Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma in Gold River on Sunday.
At last year's championships, after winning the 2V8+ race, the Golden Bears had a three-point lead in the standings going into the final competition as they split the 3V8+ and freshmen 8+ races with Washington, leaving it up to the varsity eight crew to bring home the title. The V8+ did not disappoint and beat the Huskies by four seconds to secure the title.
All races will air on Pac-12 Network beginning at 9 a.m. PT. Live results will be posted here.
The Bears are coming off a sweep of the Big Row against Stanford when both the first and second varsity eights won their duals. Cal had last week off with final exams and is ready to defend its title.
"It's been a really productive week of training, getting beyond exams and having the guys sort of bounce back energy and sleep-wise," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "It's been a really positive couple of days and I think everyone's excited to see what we can do this weekend."
Even though this will be the Bears' last Pac-12 Championship, Frandsen is not letting that distract his team.
"I try not to get distracted by external things like that," Frandsen said. "I can be aware of the magnitude of that, but the guys should just be worried about getting from point A to point B as fast as they can on race day and know that this is a big important conference championship that leads into the IRA national championship in two weeks."
Scoring System
Teams are given points for where they place in the first and second varsity eight races and the best outcome between their third and novice eight races based on the below scoring structure. The finish in the varsity eight race is used as a tiebreaker in case teams are tied in total points. The men's varsity four does not factor into the scoring.
