West Regionals Up Next For Cal

30 Bears Take Aim At NCAA Championships Qualification

BERKELEY – California track & field will compete in one last meet before the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, as the Golden Bears' 30 regional qualifiers are set to make an appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary this Wednesday through Saturday at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The meet will be streamed each day on ESPN+.

Men's and women's events are scheduled to alternate days, beginning with the first of the men's contests on Wednesday. All three of Cal's Pac-12 Champions – Rowan Hamilton (hammer), Skyler Magula (pole vault) and Jeff Duensing (shot put) – will look to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships that day. Both Magula and Duensing successfully advanced in 2023, while three-time NAIA Champion Hamilton is competing for his first-career Division I Championships spot. The latter is one of a region-high three Cal men's hammer throwers at the meet, along with two-time NCAA Championships competitor Ivar Moisander and Michael Gupta; only Southeast Missouri has as many entries in the event. Should at least two of them place in the necessary top 12 at Regionals, it would mark the first time in program history that two of the Bears' men would move on to the hammer throw championships.

Cal also earned a share of the regional lead in number of women's hammer qualifiers, as it has three (Adrianna Coleman, Kay Racine and Destiny Okoh) to match UCLA's and Minnesota's three entries apiece. The Bears also qualified three to the women's pole vault and the women's 100m hurdles, respectively; the trio of Amari Turner, Ali Sahaida and Kylie Hilton will compete together at the West Regional for a second straight year, while 2023 national qualifier Jada Hicks is joined by Jazlynn Shearer and Asjah Atkinson. In the latter event, Cal has the chance to make yet more program history, as the Bears have never had multiple women advance in the 100m hurdles.
