Cal Trio Named To USA Men’s Water Polo Olympic Roster
Weinberg To Make Olympic Debut Alongside Veterans Cupido, Hooper
Three California men's water polo alumni will head to Paris next month after being named to the 2024 USA Men's Water Polo Olympic roster on Tuesday.
The Golden Bear trio is the same that competed in four international competitions with USA Water Polo's senior squad in 2023, consisting of attackers Luca Cupido and Johnny Hooper and goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg.
Cupido – a four-time ACWPC All-American at Cal and winner of the 2017-18 Peter J. Cutino Award – will join Chris Humbert (1992-00) as the only Bears since 1956 to play in three Olympic Games.
Hooper, a 2018-19 Cutino Award finalist, will be competing in his second Olympics for Team USA. Weinberg is set to make his Olympic debut coming off a third consecutive NCAA championship and fourth straight All-America nod with Cal.
The Bears competed this past weekend in a pair of exhibition matches in San Diego that Team USA split against Montenegro. Hooper totaled six goals over two games. Weinberg had seven saves while playing the majority of the second game.
Prior to that, the Bears played for Team USA as it took ninth place at the 2024 World Championships in February in Doha, Qatar, capped off by an 11-save effort by Weinberg in a 13-9 final-round victory over Romania. Last fall, they helped Team USA clinch its 24th Olympic Berth since 1904 in a dominant run at the 2023 Pan American Games in which the Bears contributed to an undefeated 6-0 showing that included six straight double-digit wins.
Last July, the Bears helped Team USA win the bronze medal at the 2023 World Aquatics World Cup in Los Angeles, defeating Hungary 14-13 behind a team-high five saves by Weinberg and two goals each by Cupido and Hooper. It was the USA's first medal at the World Cup since claiming gold in 1997. Weinberg thrived as USA's top choice at goalkeeper at the World Cup, averaging nine saves per game including a 15-save outburst and fourth-quarter shutout in a come-from-behind opening-round victory over Serbia.
The water polo tournaments at the 2024 Paris Olympics will take place from July 27-Aug. 11. It will be the first Olympic Games to feature three Golden Bear men's water polo players in the pool since 2000.
