After a strong performance at the Battle in the Bay Classic, the California men's tennis team sends Golden Bears to compete in the ITA All-American Championships and Sherwood Collegiate Cup.

In the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, which starts Friday, players from nine teams – Cal, BYU, LMU, New Mexico, Pacific, Pepperdine, SMU, UCLA and USC – will battle in singles and doubles.

The ITA All-American Championships, which begin Saturday, will have a draw size of the following, Singles: Pre-Qualifying (128), qualifying (64), main draw (64) and Doubles: Pre-Qualifying (32), qualifying (32), main draw (32). From this, 10 singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (eight main draw quarterfinalists & two feed-in consolation finalists), while four doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the All-American Championships (four main draw semifinalists). Pre-qualifying takes place Friday and Saturday, qualifying runs Sunday and Monday and the main draws are slated for Sept. 25-29.

Overbeck Wins Triple Crown At Battle In The Bay
Carl Emil Overbeck capped his final appearance in the recent Battle in the Bay Classic by capturing the singles title, the doubles title with
Theo Dean and the singles shootout at the California Tennis Club. Three Bears – Overbeck, Dean and Stepanov – reached the singles quarterfinals, while two pairs – including the duo of Chang and Wright – advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of the tournament, which ended Sunday.

On Saturday night, Overbeck defeated Arizona's Jay Friend 10-3 and UC Santa Barbara's Gianluca Brunkow 10-8 to prevail in the singles shootout and earn wild-card entry to the singles main draw of the upcoming Solano Challenger, which is part of the ATP Challenger Tour.

On Sunday morning, the 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck defeated TCU's Duncan Chan and Michigan State's Danial Rakhmatullayev 8-6 in the doubles final, and in the afternoon, the 56th-ranked Overbeck beat TCU's 39th-ranked Lui Maxted 7-6(8), 6-4 in the singles final. By winning the singles crown in the annual San Francisco tournament, the Copenhagen, Denmark, product garnered wild-card entry into the singles main draw of the Tiburon Challenger, another tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour. A senior, Overbeck previously partnered with now Cal alumnus Yuta Kikuchi to win the 2021 and 2022 doubles titles at the Battle in the Bay Classic.

At the 2023 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa,
Carl Emil Overbeck reached the singles main draw after defeating Princeton's 73rd-ranked Top Nidunjianzan 6-4, 6-3, Baylor's 72nd-ranked Oskar Brostrom Poulsen 7-5, 2-1 (ret. inj.) and Mississippi State's Benito Sanchez Martinez 6-3, 6-2 in qualifying. But the Dane lost in the first round of the main draw to Indiana's Sam Landau 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, before splitting two matches in the consolation draw.

Cal Alums In Davis Cup
In Davis Cup World Group I play, Cal alumni contributed to recent first-round wins for Sweden and Denmark. The Swedes beat India 4-0 last weekend in Stockholm, with former Cal teammates Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi defeating N Sriram Balaji and Ramkumar Ramanthan 6-3, 6-4 in doubles. Also last weekend, the Danes knocked off host Kazakhstan 3-1 in Astana, with former Bear Philip Hjorth dropping a close match to Belbit Zhukayev 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
