BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team placed three Golden Bears in the singles round 16 and two duos in the doubles round of 16 with victories Saturday in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
 
Cal junior Mao Mushika and Berta Passola Folch each advanced in singles and doubles. In the main draw doubles round of 32, fifth-seeded Mushika and Greta Greco Lucchina edged Oregon's Patsy Daughters and Bridget Mihulka 8-7(5), while the ninth-seeded Passola Folch and Mille Johanna Moerk bested Oregon's Avery Jennings and Hadley Appling 8-3.
 
In main draw singles, the top-seeded and 17th-ranked Mushika did not drop a set in two wins, including a 6-4, 6-4 result over Oregon's Olivia Symons in the second round. Passola Folch – seeded eighth and ranked 113th – also did not lose a set in her two matches, which included a 6-3, 6-2 win over Polina Marakhtanova of UC Davis in the round of 32. The third Bear to advance to Sunday's third round was Naomi Xu, whose round of 32 match was an impressive 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Stanford's fourth-seeded and 83rd-ranked Monika Ekstrand.
 
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships – which include matches at the Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley and the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary's – are slated to end Tuesday.
