Women’s Basketball Hosts Sixth Annual Race For Change
Event Takes Place Oct. 18 At Lake Merritt
The California women's basketball team is hosting its sixth annual
Race For Change at Lake Merritt in Oakland on Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. PT. The event has become a Cal community social justice event over the years, led by the Golden Bears. In its sixth year, the mission stays the same: to work together to strive for justice, create sustainable change and to slowly but decisively dismantle systems of oppression and uplift the Black Community.
Created by the UC San Diego basketball programs as a way to address racial equality across the country, each program that joins chooses its own fundraising initiative centered around racial equality. Since the first event, the Bears have raised over $30,000 for Cal Athletics' Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Justice office, and this year the goal is to raise $8,000. The office, led by Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas, is responsible for developing, implementing and administering diversity, equal employment opportunity and affirmative action efforts in order to comply with government legislation and management directives, and to support equity and inclusion programs.
In the last several years, the DEIBJ office has led many efforts thanks to these fundraising efforts:
- Sent over 70 students and staff in total to the annual Black Student-Athlete Summit since 2023.
- Hosted educational sessions like the Rise to Win Professional Development Session for student-athletes and staff.
- Increased Black Student-Athlete engagement among the Cal community and college athletics, which led to Cal's Black Student-Athlete Community (BSAC) winning the 2024 Black Student-Athlete Summit Student Group of the Year Award.
- Provided resources and funding for Cal Athletics affinity groups for staff and student-athletes to connect in community throughout the year.
