Bears Embark On Final Regular Season Road Trip

The California women's soccer team is set to embark on its final road trip of the regular season, facing Miami on Thursday and No. 7 Florida State on Sunday. After a couple of solid results last week, the Golden Bears will look to keep that momentum going down the final stretch of the season as they make one final push for postseason eligibility.

Cal (7-2-7, 3-1-3 ACC) is coming off possibly the best draw in program history Thursday when it came back from down 2-0 to tie No. 1 Virginia in the final six minutes of the match. Senior Lumi Kostmayer scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season via a penalty kick in the 84th minute and junior Soleil Dimry provided the equalizer in the 88th minute, hitting a perfect shot from 40 yards away to stun the Cavaliers.

The Bears closed out the weekend with a 1-0 win over Virginia Tech, with Dimry coming through once again by providing the game-winning goal in the 50th minute. It was Cal's seventh shutout of the season, which is the fourth-most in the nation this year.

The ACC Championship Picture
Cal currently sits alone in sixth place in the ACC standings with 12 points and just three matches to go. Should the Bears remain in that spot or move up, they would qualify for their first ACC Championship, a postseason tournament that features the six teams with the most conference points. Just above Cal is a three-way tie for third place between No. 3 Virginia, No. 7 Florida State, and Louisville, which all have 13 points. The Bears will face a last-place team in Miami this week but close out the regular season against two of the top 10 teams in the country in FSU and No. 2 Stanford.

Wy Earns Third ACC Defensive Player Of The Week Award
Goalkeeper Teagan Wy earned her third ACC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season on Tuesday. Wy led the Golden Bears to two results last week, tying No. 1 Virginia 2-2 and blanking Virginia Tech on Senior Day, 1-0. She is the sole player to win the award multiple times this season.

After allowing a pair of early goals to the Hoos on Thursday, Wy shut down the nation's top-ranked team for the final 75 minutes and recorded a season-high seven saves, which allowed Cal to make the late-game comeback. On Sunday, she set a new season high, tallying eight saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season, which is a career high and ranks 19th in the nation.

Wy ranks second in the ACC with 68 total saves and a 4.25 saves per game average, and third with a .829 save percentage. Her 0.88 goals against average and save percentage lines are the best of her career since taking over as the everyday starter between the posts in 2023.

Brace Yourself
Senior transfer Lumi Kostmayer doubled her season goals total by earning a brace on the road at Clemson on Sept. 14. She scored in the 52nd minute on an assist from junior Miriam Hils and found the net again unassisted in the 60th to become the first Bear this year with a multigoal match. Kostmayer now leads the team with five goals and 12 points.

Spreading The Love
Cal's 20 goals this year have come off eight different boots. Thirteen total Bears have accounted for the team's 57 points, with all but six goals being assisted on so far. Seventeen of the 20 goals have been scored by newcomers and Bears that missed all or most of last season with injuries.

200 Club
On Aug. 21, Cal head coach Neil McGuire achieved his 200th victory as the leader of the Golden Bears. The Bears' 3-2 win over San Francisco sealed the career milestone for McGuire, who is the program's all-time wins leader. His Cal record currently sits at 205-119-61 and he has 249 wins in his career
