DALLAS – The California women's soccer team suffered its first defeat since late August on Sunday falling on the road to SMU at Washburne Stadium 2-1. It was the Golden Bears first ACC loss of the season, and it ended a nine-match unbeaten streak.
Cal (6-2-6, 2-1-2) was outshot 16-5, placing just one shot on goal, and only found the net as a result of an SMU own goal.
The Mustangs (8-3-2, 2-1-2) earned their first win over the Bears who still lead the all-time series 5-1-0.
After a scoreless first half the Mustang offense erupted with 12 shots in the second period. A goal by Liz Eddy in the 64th minute was equalized just six minutes later on a Mustang own goal, but SMU took a late lead with Eddy scoring once again in the 84th minute.
Cal's senior goalkeeper
Teagan Wy picked up a pair of saves. She and six other Bears played the entirety of the match including 5th year
Mia Fontana who went wire-to-wire for just the second time this year.
The Bears are back at home this week hosting No. 1 Virginia on Thursday and Virginia Tech on Thursday. Both matches will be streamed on ACCNX.
