Bardana, Li Combine For Five Titles At Elite Canada
Li Wins Second Major Pommel Horse Gold, Bardana Takes Senior Next Gen All-Around Crown
MARKHAM, Ont. – The California men's gymnastics team's two Canadian stars will be flying back to Berkeley with several medals in their possession after a successful final day in the men's artistic gymnastics portion of Elite Canada, earning five total gold medals and one silver medal between them at the Markham Pan-Am Center.
Graduate student
Aidan Li earned his second major Canadian title on pommel horse, posting the largest margin of victory in any individual senior event at the meet. After earning the best score of all Session I pommel horse competitors on Friday, he recorded a massive improvement of .850 Sunday for a 14.500, which earned him the top spot yet again by .900. Li's two-day average of 28.150 led the field by 1.400 points.
Freshman
Matteo Bardana came into Sunday sitting in the point position for the floor competition and had the meet of his life, recording improvements on four of six events and notching four wins and a runner-up finish in the Senior Next Gen age category. He started off the day with a first-place 11.966 on high bar, followed by a top-ranked 13.644 on floor and an 11.150 on pommel horse. Bardana claimed his final individual win on rings with a score of 12.150, then ended the day with a 13.000 on vault and a runner-up 12.700 on parallel bars. His all-around score of 74.599 – third-best among all gymnasts – was good enough to earn Senior Next Gen gold.
