Stunning Comeback Lifts Bears Over Ducks

Cal Erases Early Five-Goal Deficit For Victory

BERKELEY – The California lacrosse team dug itself an early hole before storming back with a breathtaking turnaround, defeating Oregon 10-7 on Thursday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.

It looked as though the Ducks (4-1) would have their way with the Golden Bears at the outset, leading 6-1 at the end of the first period and limiting Cal's scoring chances. But the Bears scored the next seven goals in a row over a span of 22:30 to surge in front 8-6 midway through the third quarter. When Oregon finally broke its scoring drought with 3:42 remaining in the third to trim Cal's advantage to a single goal, it had been over 26 minutes since the Ducks found the back of the net.

Sophomore Emily Moes led the scoring with three goals while Courtney Wong, Kennedy Mason, and Jane Middleton each added a pair of scores apiece. Goalie Callan Fritsch made 13 saves for the Bears.

After the teams traded a goal each to begin the game – with Mason getting on the scoreboard first for Cal – the Bears were dominated for most of the remainder of the first quarter. But Cal turned up the defense and clawed back, with Mason and Middleton each scoring twice during the decisive run. Middleton gave the Bears the lead with back-to- back goals after the game was tied at 6-6.

The Ducks' Liv Kozitza scored her third goal to cut Cal's lead to 8-7 with 3:42 left in the third quarter, but Moes closed it out with back-to-back goals.

The Bears return to ACC play Saturday by hosting Virginia at California Memorial Stadium.
