50th Season In Program History Gets Underway
The California women's rowing team, ranked No. 8 in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Pocock Poll, will get the 50th campaign in program history fully underway as the Bears' top four boats will race for the first time this season. Cal's V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and 3V8+ will take on some of the top programs in the country at the annual San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on Saturday and Sunday.
The V8+ will race in the women's varsity 8+ Jessop-Whittier Cup and the V4+ will compete for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup – races that both crews finished in second place last year behind eventual NCAA Champion Texas. The 2V8+ will race for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy and try to improve upon a third-place finish from last year and the 3V8+ will attempt to repeat as winners of the Carley Copley Cup as it beat out Texas last year.
"Going into the first race of the season the challenge is always to channel all the extra energy and nerves into the footboards and get into our racing rhythm sooner than later," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "The San Diego Crew Classic is always a lot of fun. We'll have the support from our alumni groups that are in Southern California. There will be sun, wind, unfair racing lanes, and some of the best crews in the country. It's a great opportunity for us to work on focus and execution amongst all the distractions."
All races will be live streamed HERE and results will be posted HERE.
