Bears Take Down No. 10 Indiana
Bogachenko, Swadling Nearly Match Hoosiers In Goals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 5 California women's water polo team came away with a 19-10 win over No. 10 Indiana on Saturday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, led by another five-goal outing by Miriam Bogachenko.
It was the second time in three games that Cal's standout freshman put up five or more goals, giving her 16 goals over her last six appearances. Senior Ruby Swadling scored four times, including a pair of third-quarter goals to help the Golden Bears (14-3, 2-2 MPSF) pull away.
The Bears put up at least four goals on the Hoosiers (16-8, 0-4) in every quarter of what was a tight game for most of the first half. Bogachenko and sophomore Feline Voordouw ended the half with two unanswered strikes to send Cal into halftime leading 8-5.
The lead grew in the third quarter, as the Bears once again closed out the period with two unanswered goals, this time from Swadling on a 6-on-5 and senior Claire Rowell off a long feed by goalkeeper Talia Fonseca. Cal went on to outscore Indiana 11-5 over the final 16 minutes.
Fonseca finished with 10 saves for the third time in her last four outings. Sophomore Julianne Snyder came up big on the defensive end with three steals to go with an assist.
Cal will conclude its trip to Indiana with a noon PT matchup against No. 15 Michigan.
