BERKELEY – The west region No. 1 California rugby team will welcome No. 5 Arizona to Berkeley for the 2025 D1A National Collegiate Championship quarterfinals Saturday. The Golden Bears and the Wildcats will kick off at 1 p.m. PT, with the gates to Witter Rugby Field set to open at noon for fan entry.
Cal routed No. 8 Colorado State, 76-7, in the first round of the postseason last weekend in Strawberry Canyon. The Bears sent out a starting lineup that featured nine underclassmen and saw five more come off the bench in the single-elimination playoff contest. Seven different players scored 12 total tries and the Bears held the Rams to only one converted try to secure the victory and advance to the next round.
Arizona is among the final eight for the first time since 2019 after beating No. 4 Cal Poly, 47-19, in San Luis Obispo last Saturday. The 'Cats put together an 8-6 overall record in 2024-25 action, including wins over No. 8 Colorado State (45-7) and No. 6 Brigham Young (32-22). Arizona took close losses to west region opponents No. 2 Saint Mary's (12-10), No. 7 UCLA (30-27) and No. 3 Central Washington (31-29). The 'Cats also took a close defeat by east region No. 4 Army (24-19) and fell to No. 6 Mount St. Mary's (45-20).
Cal and Arizona last met for a regular season contest on Feb. 1 when the Bears shut out the 'Cats, 46-0. Seven different players registered tries, led by a pair from junior Cade Crist, in what was Cal's third-consecutive shutout of the season.
Senior captain Charlie Walsh is expected to lead out a first-15 with several changes from the Bears' first round contest. Junior halfback duo Solomon Williams and Rand Santos are likely to return to the pitch to lead Cal's attack while Walsh and Crist will lead the forward pack.
Tickets to the match can be purchased in advance here. Fans unable to attend in person can watch the live stream on ESPN+.
