Cal Advances Seven To NCAA Championship Round
Bears Score Season-High 319.091 Team Points
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The California men's gymnastics team posted a season-high 319.091 points in the qualifying round of the NCAA Championships at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Friday morning and qualified seven gymnasts for Saturday's championship round. The team total beat the Golden Bears' previous season best of 315.450, which was set at this year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, and placed the Bears fourth overall in Friday's session.
Those qualifying for the championship round are
Matteo Bardana (floor exercise and rings),
Khalen Curry (floor),
Theodor Roald Gadderud (all-around),
Jasper Smith-Gordon (vault),
Tomo Kawada (rings),
Aidan Li (pommel horse) and
Tyler Shimizu (all-around).
Gordon-Smith stuck his landing to finish first overall in the vault with a season-high score of 14.533 – marking the second straight year a Bear finished first in the event in the qualifying round (
Khalen Curry). His score beat his previous best of 14.250.
Li finished second overall in the pommel horse with a score of 14.433 – behind last year's national champion in the event, Patrick Hoopes from Air Force.
Shimizu competed in the all-around for the first time this season and finished second overall with a score of 78.199, followed by Roald Gadderud who finished third with a score of 77.464.
Kawada led all Bears on rings with a score of 13.100 (11th overall) and was followed by Bardana, who tied for 12th overall with a score of 13.066. Bardana also scored a 13.566 in the floor exercise to finish eighth overall while Curry tied for 11th place with a score of 13.466.
"I'm proud of this team and how they came together today," Cal interim head coach
Bryan Del Castillo said. "We had a strong start on pommel horse which really helped build momentum for the rest of the competition. Our vault lineup was awesome and Jasper finished it with the best vault of the meet. We got sticks on parallel bars and high bar, which helped keep us in the mix. It's a day I will always remember. The energy and support within the team was incredible. We qualified two all-arounders and five individuals into finals so our work isn't done yet."
Saturday's championship round is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
