Bears Make Move In Round 2 Of Reno Regional
Cal Jumps Into Fifth Place After Difficult First Round; Play Suspended Again
RENO, Nev. – The California men's golf team ended the second day of the 2025 NCAA Reno Regional in fifth place at 9-over-par after completing the remainder of round one and playing an impeccable first 13-14 holes of round two at Montreux Golf & Country Club.
After finishing the first round – which resumed at noon PT Tuesday after high winds limited play to roughly just two hours Monday – in 12th place with a 20-over-par 308, the Golden Bears skyrocketed seven spots up the leaderboard by shooting 11-under-par collectively through the first 75% of the second round before play was suspended due to darkness at 8 p.m. PT.
Cal, the regional's ninth seed, will enter the final day of the tournament with 22-23 total holes left to play and a three-stroke lead on sixth-place San Diego (+12). The top five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to a field of 30 teams and six additional individuals that will play in the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad on May 23-28.
Veterans
Daniel Heo and
Kuangyu (Tony) Chen set the tone for Cal in round two, shooting 5-under through 14 holes and 4-under through 13 holes, respectively. Heo (T19, +2) went birdie-birdie-eagle on holes 8-10 after starting on 6 and added two more birdies on 13 and 18 before a bogey at 1 dropped him back to 5-under. Chen – who subbed in for
Wenliang Xie after the first round – was ready for the opportunity, playing bogey-free golf between holes 5-18; he carded birdies on 12, 14, 16 and 18 before the round was halted.
Charlie Berridge and
Ziqin (Eric) Zhou will start Wednesday tied for 22nd individually at 3-over after both shot 1-under through their first 14 and 13 holes of round two, respectively.
BYU (-5) sits atop the leaderboard while Virginia (-4), Texas (E) and Mississippi State (+3) round out the top four.
Second-round play will resume at 8:30 a.m. PT Wednesday. The third round will be played later that day.
