OFF THE TEE
1. Sihao Cong
Cong, a redshirt freshman, is the Bears' No. 1 golfer in Reno after a team-best 14th-place finish at the ACC Championship in Kentucky two weeks ago. Cong (72.70 stroke average) has played his best golf down the stretch this season with two additional top-30 finishes since the start of March at the Cabo Collegiate (T27) and the Western Intercollegiate (T30).
2. Ziqin (Eric) Zhou
The Golden Bear rookie – named team MVP last week – is Cal's top-ranked golfer (No. 194) heading into the Reno Regional. Zhou (72.59) has six top-25 finishes this season, most recently including a tie for 25th at the ACC Championship. He flashed his talent with a second-round 64 at the Western Intercollegiate – one shot off the tournament's low 18-hole record – in mid-April and made a splash last fall with a runner-up finish at the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Gotemba.
3. Wenliang Xie
Cal will continue to rely on Xie's experience, as the graduate transfer is one of just three Bears who have played in an NCAA Regional or NCAA Championship event. Xie, who tied for 47th individually for Seton Hall at the 2024 NCAA Santa Fe Regional, owns a team-best 71.41 stroke average this season.
4. Daniel Heo
Heo has three top-six individual finishes this season, including back-to-back efforts to start the 2024 fall slate as well as a tie for fifth as the Western Intercollegiate just last month. Heo (72.11), who battled ups and downs early on this spring, also tied for 22nd at the ACC Championship. He has previous NCAA Regional experience, playing in the Morgan Hill Regional as a freshman two years ago.
5. Charlie Berridge
Berridge is tied for the team lead in events (9) and rounds (27) played this year. The senior co-captain has one top-10 finish – ninth at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate – this season and most recently tied for 49th at the Western Intercollegiate. He owns a 72.25 stroke average.
RETURN TO REGIONAL PLAY
The Bears have made 25 previous NCAA Regional appearances dating back to 1990, including a stretch of 10 straight years from 2007-16. Their current streak of three straight appearances dating back to 2023 is tied for the third-longest stretch in program history. Cal has won two NCAA Regionals – in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013 – while alumnus Michael Weaver (2009-14) is the program's only NCAA Regional individual winner, having earned co-medalist honors in 2013.
A LOOK AROUND THE FIELD
Cal is the closest team geographically to Montreux Golf & Country Club – approximately 230 miles – of the 14 in the Reno Regional. The Bears have seen eight of their regional counterparts previously this season, including in-state foes San Diego and Santa Clara – which Cal will play alongside in the first round Monday – and ACC peers Virginia and Duke. Five teams in the field won their respective conference titles: Virginia (ACC), Sam Houston (Conference USA), East Tennessee State (SoCon), Central Arkansas (ASUN) and Fairfield (MAAC).
GOLDEN BEAR SUCCESS AT MONTREUX
Cal alumnus and PGA Tour standout Collin Morikawa knows his way around Montreux Golf & Country Club, having won his first career PGA Tour title – the Barracuda Championship – at the course in July 2019. Morikawa, who had turned pro just two months prior following the 2019 NCAA Championship, birdied the final three holes and rallied to win the tournament title.
MILE HIGH
Elevation will play a role in Reno, as Montreux Golf & Country Club sits at 5,550 feet above sea level. It's more than 3,000 feet higher than any course the Bears have played this season.
LEADING THE CHARGE
The Bears have laid the building blocks for a successful future in their first season under Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Michael Wilson, who was hired to the position on July 22, 2024. Wilson, a 2007 alumnus and key member of Cal's 2004 NCAA Men's Golf Championship team, returned to Berkeley most recently following two successful seasons at the helm of Colorado State's program (2022-24), having led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and a 2023 NCAA Championship berth. He's in his eighth season as a Division I head coach.
