SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The California softball team (35-18, 11-13 ACC) ended its regular season slate with a pair of wins to earn the series sweep against Syracuse (27-22, 6-19 ACC) on Saturday at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Mika Lee led the Golden Bears with five hits on the day while
Tianna Bell,
Acacia Anders and
Lagi Quiroga recorded a home run. Cal put on a show on the defensive end with multiple spectacular plays throughout the day.
Game 1: Cal – 9 | Syracuse– 0
In the first inning, Bell drilled her team-leading 15th home run over the trees in left field to give the Bears an early 3-0 advantage.
Kayli Couts added to the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single.
Nailyn Marshall followed with a base hit in the next at-bat to bring two base runners across home plate, giving Cal a 6-0 lead.
With a runner on first and second base, Lee found the gap for a base hit to increase the lead in the sixth inning. Later in the frame,
D'Auna Johnson executed a sacrifice fly to help give the Bears a commanding 9-0 advantage.
Miranda De Nava pitched a complete game shutout after throwing six innings with two strikeouts, earning her 12th win of the season.
Game 2: Cal – 4 | Syracuse – 2
The bats were still hot at the start of the second game when Anders recorded her sixth home run of the season in the first inning to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Bell continued her day with an RBI double to push the lead to 2-0.
The Orange slowly began to gain momentum after holding Cal scoreless while tying the score in the bottom of the seventh inning to force the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 11th inning, Quiroga helped the Bears reclaim the lead with a go-ahead home run to silence the home crowd.
In a pitching duel that saw both starting pitchers throw 11 innings,
Annabel Teperson earned her fifth win with three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
Cal will begin postseason play on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Championship as the ninth seed against eighth-seeded Georgia Tech.
