GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The surging California women's golf team brings a healthy dose of momentum into the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional this week at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club, as the sixth-seeded Golden Bears look to finish in the top 5 of the 12-team field and punch a ticket to the 2025 NCAA Championships later this month in Carlsbad.
Cal is coming off a strong run at its first-ever ACC Championship, tying for fifth (out of 15 teams) in stroke play and advancing to the semifinals of match play after upsetting No. 11 Virginia in the first round. The Bears also placed in a tie for fourth at the season-ending Silverado Showdown in Napa, finishing higher than No. 3 Oregon and No. 16 Arizona.
The top five teams in each of the six regionals across the country earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. The Bears, who have qualified for the NCAA Regionals in 24 of the past 25 years, are looking for their first NCAA Championships berth since 2018.
Sophomore Constance Fouillet leads the way for Cal, having finished in a tie for second place at the Silverado Showdown – the best finish for a Cal women's golfer in over two years. Her current season scoring average of 72.4 would tie the program record set by teammate Adora Liu last season. Last year, Fouillet established a new program benchmark for freshman season scoring average at 72.6.
FULL CIRCLE: Senior Kaylyn Noh and head coach Sofie Aagaard have come full circle together in Noh's final year at Cal. Noh originally attended Cal Poly and was the Big West Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in 2022 when Aagaard was the Mustangs' head coach. Aagaard is in her first year as the Bears' head coach – just in time to coach Noh one final season in her college career. Noh ranks third on the team with a 73.5 scoring average and is coming off her best performance of the season, tying for fifth individually in stroke play at the ACC Championship.
ADORA DOING HER THING: One year after recording the lowest single-season scoring average in program history, junior Adora Liu is enjoying another solid season for the Golden Bears. Her 73.0 average this season ranks second on the team and she has 12 rounds of par or better. Liu has finished in the top 25 in each of the past three tournaments.
SHE'S BACK: Almost 20 years after putting together one of the most accomplished playing careers in Cal women's golf history, Sofie Aagaard returned to Berkeley last year to take over the reins of legendary head coach and program founder Nancy McDaniel. Aagaard was a three-time All-American as a player at Cal and led the Bears to three straight top 5 finishes at the NCAA Championships. She was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.
