No. 17 Cal Ties UCSD 1-1

BERKELEY – Malcolm Zalayet gave the 17th-ranked California men's soccer team a halftime lead over UC San Diego on a warm Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium, but the Tritons scored in the second half and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Cal's record is 2-1-1 after the nonconference game. UCSD improved to 0-2-1.

In front of a good crowd at Edwards – which hosted a doubleheader that began with a Cal women's soccer win over Arizona – Cal controlled much of the action, outshooting UCSD 15-4 for the game, including 8-2 in the first half.

The game seemed to be headed for a 0-0 halftime score. But then at the 44:11 mark, Cal midfielder Cam Wilkerson crossed the ball into the UCSD penalty area and found Zalayet on the edge of the six-yard box. The forward redirected the cross off the post and into the net. Cal led 1-0 at the break.

In the 73rd minute, UCSD got the equalizer when Keenai Braun's headed pass found Evan Wellestein deep in Cal's box, and the Triton scored.

Cal outshot the Tritons 3-0 the rest of the way, with Isaiah Thomas (in the 81st minute) and Alfredo Ortiz (88th) getting good looks. But UCSD goalkeeper Nolan Premack saved both shots, and the teams settled for the draw.

"We did enough to win the game when you look at 15-4 in shots and chances created, but at the end of the day you have to put one more in the back of the net," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "Credit to them for being very disciplined, organized and hard to break down defensively. We're going to be disappointed not getting out of here with a win. A tie, at the end of the day, is not the worst thing, but we've got to do better in terms of finishing our chances. We'll learn from it, and we'll get some rest here before we go on a road trip next week to Boston."

Cal opens its ACC schedule when it plays at Boston College on Sept 7 and then takes on Harvard in a nonconference match on Sept. 10.
