BERKELEY – The No. 3 California men's water polo team (7-0) secured its third straight ranked victory after defeating No. 6 San Jose State (4-2), 12-10, on Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Golden Bears had nine different student-athletes record at least one goal in today's contest, led by freshman
Beso Akhvlediani, who scored three goals on four shot attempts. Akhvlediani leads the team in goals (22) and points (30) through seven games this season.
How it happened:
- Albert Ponferrada scored the first goal of the contest.
- Patrik Kolak secured his 10th goal of the season late in the first.
- The Bears held the Spartans scoreless in the opening period.
- The Spartans outscored the Bears 4-2 in the second quarter to even the score at the half.
- Aran Pina tallied nine of his 11 saves in the first half.
- Cal responded with five goals in the third quarter, two from Beso Akhvlediani.
- 9 Bears provided at least once score: Akhvlediani (3), Perrone (2), Wilson (1), Ponferrada (1), Szatmary (1), Kolak (1), Kelly (1), Inoue (1), Mirkovic (1).
- Cal earned a total of 10 exclusions.
- The Bears recorded six field blocks and nine steals.
- Tomas Perrone had a game-high plus/minus of +6.2.
- Cal converted two of its nine power-play opportunities.
- The Bears shot at a 43% (12-of-28) clip in today's game.
