SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.– Despite playing with just 10 Golden Bears for most of the match, the California women's soccer team earned its second straight shutout tying Cal Poly 0-0 on the road Sunday.
For the second time this week, Cal's goalkeeper
Teagan Wy earned a season-high seven saves. She and the Bears (3-1-4) now have three shutouts this season. They have now gone unbeaten for four straight matches, which is an early season high, and have not allowed a goal in over 211 minutes.
In the 14th minute the Mustangs (2-0-6) had a breakaway at the goal. Cal center back
Malia McMahon caught up to the action and got tangled with the Cal Poly defender taking her to the ground. The junior was issued the first red card of her career for denying a scoring chance which forced the Bears to compete with just 10 players for the remainder of the match.
The Cal defense bent but refused to break keeping the Mustangs' 15 shots out of the net. In addition to her seven saves Wy broke up a handful of other Cal Poly chances to preserve the clean sheet.
The Bears were outshot for just the second time this season 15-12 and put a season-low two on frame. Senior midfielders
Coco Thistle and
Noelle Bond-Flasza accounted for the two shots on goal and led the team with four shots each.
Cal will hit the road this week to open ACC play facing Pitt on Thursday and Clemson on Sunday. The matchup with the Tigers will be the Bears' first of two contests aired on ACC Network this season.
