Underhill Named CGA Co-Rookie Of The Week

Cal Freshman Helped Vault Lineup To Nation-Best Score Against Stanford

California men's gymnastics freshman Nathan Underhill has been named the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Co-Rookie of the Week for his performance last Friday in the Golden Bears' season opener against Stanford, the organization announced Wednesday. Underhill, a native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, shares the award with Michigan's Eli Osuna.

As one of two Cal freshmen making their collegiate debuts last week, Underhill started off his night with a 12.700 on rings, second best on the squad, before posting a 14.000 on vault for the first of the Bears' three 14.000-plus scores on the event. The squad finished with a total score of 55.200, which led the nation in week one.

"It was a solid debut from Nathan," head coach Bryan Del Castillo said. "He rose to the moment and did a great vault, which helped create momentum for the rest of the lineup. Nathan is a confident competitor and he has talent – watch out for him this year."

Underhill is just the fourth Cal gymnast in history to win national rookie of the week honors, joining teammate Jasper Smith-Gordon (2023) and alumni Noah Newfeld (2021) and Darren Wong (2019). This is the seventh such award won by a Bear, with Newfeld holding a program-record four.

Underhill and the Bears will return to action next Saturday at the Stanford Open, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. PT in Stanford's Burnham Pavilion.
