Jasper Smith-Gordon posted both the best vault score in the nation and the best overall execution score at the Stanford Open.
STANFORD – The California men's gymnastics team showed a good deal of growth in its second meet of the season, bettering its season-opening score by 4.250 points to 313.250 in a high-level Stanford Open competition with Stanford, Ohio State, and a multitude of individual gymnasts at Burnham Pavilion. The hosting Cardinal team finished with a score of 326.450, while the Buckeyes posted a score of 318.050.
The meet also marked the season debut of Norwegian national team member
Theodor Roald Gadderud, who competed in the Bears' first three events and posted strong scores on each, including a score of 13.950 on parallel bars that was the best by any Bear in the modern scoring system.
"Honestly, being out there felt natural, like I was right back in the rhythm and where I should be," he said. "I stayed present, trusted the work I've put in, and let the performance take care of itself. We knew this was a high-energy and fun meet and approached it that way as a team. Having the support of my teammates and coaches made it easier to settle in and really enjoy being back out there, but there is still a lot of work to be done and this is just the beginning of the season."
The Bears started off on rings and posted a strong improvement from their season opener with a total score of 52.350. Roald Gadderud, kicked off the action with a team-high 13.300, followed by sticks from
Troy Nuesca and
Matteo Bardana to post scores of 13.100 and 13.200, respectively. Freshman
Nathan Underhill, who was named the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Co-Rookie of the Week after his standout season opener, posted an exhibition score of 13.250 with a stick to begin his first collegiate all-around campaign.
Cal won the vault title by a full point with a score of 56.650, which is also the highest score in the nation to date this season, thanks to four scores of 14.000 or better from its lineup. After
Khalen Curry and Roald Gadderud started things off with matching scores of 14.000, Underhill posted a personal-best 14.000 followed by a monster 14.550 from redshirt senior
Jasper Smith-Gordon – a score that bettered his own program record and stands as the top score in the country. His execution score of 9.750 was also the best of any routine in the meet, mirroring the circumstances of his vault title from two weeks prior.
Bardana led off the parallel bars group by matching his personal best (13.400) with another stick, adding to Cal's total of 52.050 that included a second stick from Underhill and Roald Gadderud's program record in the anchor spot. The Canadian Senior Next Gen national team member then posted Cal's top score on high bar (13.450) for the second meet in a row, having set a new program record in the Bears' season opener two weeks prior.
The first man on Cal's floor lineup ended up posting the team's top score on the event as
Trigg Dudley, the CGA All-Star winner, recorded a PR of 13.450. Pommel horse was the Bears' last event of the evening, with
Harry Kim and Smith-Gordon closing out the competition with identical scores of 13.500.
