The Bears Were Able To Add Another Win To Their Resume
BERKELEY—Following a thrilling 3-1 victory over the NC State Wolfpack on Friday, the California Golden Bears (14-4) took on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (8-10) on Sunday.
In front of a rowdy Haas Pavilion crowd, Cal looked to make a statement and did just that. The first set was filled with exceptional diving plays on defense and a few monster kills by Abby Zimmerman and Sawyer Thomsen on offense. While Wake Forest's record indicates the team is struggling, the Demon Deacons were able to keep things close throughout.
The first set featured 10 ties and seven lead changes, but it was Cal who came out on top, winning 25-21. While the Bears were able to fend off the Deacs in the opener, the second set was just as contentious as the first. Wake and Cal exchanged the lead five different times and also tied one another 10 different times. This time, it was the Demon Deacons who walked away victorious, winning 25-22.
Although the third set finished 25-22, the Bears led by as many as seven. Wake Forest was able to hang in there but was unable to close the gap.
Following back-to-back sets that were tightly contested, the Bears slammed the door shut in the fourth.
Cal sprinted to a 7-1 lead before Wake Forest was able to cut it to 10-7. Just when it seemed like the two teams would stay close in score, the Bears went on a massive run. After Wake made it 13-10 in favor of Cal, the Golden Bears rattled off nine unanswered points. While the Demon Deacons showed a bit of fight, it was too little, too late. The Bears would go on to win 25-13, and take the match 3-1.
