SANTA CLARA – The California softball team fell 7-2 to former Pac-12 foe Utah but bounced back with an 8-2 victory over Santa Clara University to close out day one of the Silicon Valley Classic.

Game 1: Cal 2, Utah 7
The Bears fell in an early 3-0 hole after playing one. After a scoreless second inning the Bears got on the board in the third, courtesy of a two-run homer from
Anaya Togia to pull within one, 3-2.

The Utes responded with a four-run fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-2. The Bears weren't able to build on Togia's homer bringing the final score to 7-2 in favor of Utah.

Kyndal Todd finished game one 2-4 with a double and a single, while
Tamya Waiters (0-1) recorded her first loss of the season.

Game 2: Cal 8, SCU 2
The Bears and Broncos were scoreless through two until an RBI single up the middle gave Santa Clara a 1-0 lead through three.
Mya McGowan recorded her first collegiate hit and later scored on an RBI single by German to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth.

Santa Clara retook the lead in the fifth on a single up the middle to bring the score to 2-1. Once again German stepped up with a tying run on base and delivered a double to the gap to tie things up at 2-2 in the top of the sixth.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh Togia drilled a double to right center to drive in two runs. The Bears added a run on an error before German recorded her third RBI of the game.
D'Auna Johnson rounded out the six-run inning with an RBI groundout to give the Bears a commanding 8-2 lead.

On the mound McGowan (2-2)Â pitched a gem, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
Taylor Peacock shut the door in the seventh facing the minimum to secure the 8-2 win.

The Bears (2-5) resume play in the Silicon Valley Classic on Saturday with a doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara.
