FULLERTON – The California softball team dropped both contests Thursday at the 20th annual Judi Garman Classic, falling to BYU, 7-6, before an 8-0 five-inning loss to No. 6 Florida.
Â
Game 1: Cal 6, BYU 7
Cal opened the scoring on a double steal in the first to pull ahead early 1-0.
Â
The Cougars took the lead in the first on a two-run home run and extended their lead in the second, scoring four to extend the lead to 6-1 through two innings.
Â
Anya German made things interesting with a two-run single to right center to pull within three, 6-3. In the home half of the fourth BYU drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to stretch their lead to 7-3.
Â
Cal mounted its most significant push in the fifth. Gator Robinson lined a two-run single down the right field line to make it a two-run game. A walk and catchers interference loaded the bases, and Emma Jackson brought home a run on a fielder's choice to trim the margin to 7-6. The Bears, however, were unable to plate the tying run, leaving the comeback one swing short.
Â
Game 2: Florida 8, Cal 0
Florida applied immediate pressure, scoring six runs over the first three innings to take control.
Â
Anaya Togia kept the Gators off the scoreboard in the fourth, but Florida scored two in the fifth to put the run-rule in play. Cal recorded its first hits of the game in the final frame, yet both runners were stranded to conclude the contest in five innings.
The Bears (5-13) continue play at the Judi Garman Classic on Friday with a matchup against Seattle University.
