Cal Defeats SMU In Round 2 Of ACC Championship
CARY, N.C. - The No. 47 California men's tennis team (16-12) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship after defeating No. 34 SMU (19-11) 5-0 in the second round on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park.
In doubles play, Cal took a 1-0 lead after wins on Courts 2 and 3. On Court 2,
Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and
Tiago Silva won 6-3. Then, on Court 3,
Bernardo Munk Mesa and
Paris Pouatcha clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory. The duo has now clinched both doubles points at the ACC Championship.
In singles play against the Mustangs,
Bernardo Munk Mesa secured Cal's second point of the day, with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory on Court 4. Then, on Court 5, Pouatcha gave the Bears their third point of the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win. Finally, on Courts 2 and 3, Silva and Stepanov simultaneously won their respective singles matches to clinch the victory for the Bears. Cal is now 1-1 against SMU this season, falling 4-3 to the Mustangs in March during the regular season.
Next the Bears will face No. 4 Virginia on Friday in the quarterfinals. Cal last faced the Cavaliers on March 6 in Berkeley, where Virginia won 4-1.
