REDWOOD SHORES – The No. 6 California women's rowing team fell to No. 2 Stanford at the Big Row on Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears' top three varsity eights and three varsity fours were swept by the Cardinal at the annual dual meet.
 
The contest marked the end of the regular season as both teams will now prepare to compete at the ACC Championships May 16-17 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  
 
As is tradition, the Bears dedicated Saturday's races to Jill Costello, the former Cal coxswain who passed away in 2010 at the age of 22 after a battle with lung cancer. The squad wore "Team Jill" tank tops in her honor. The team also celebrated Senior Day, recognizing the graduating seniors in their final competition on their home course.
 
Stanford handled the Bears in each race, with the closest race of the day between the third varsity fours. The Bears and Cardinal battled all the way down the course until Stanford was able to pull away at the end to come away with a two-second margin of victory.
 
"We raced today as Team Jill to honor the legacy of Jill Costello. It was great to see Jill's parents, Jim and Mary, at the awards ceremony and hear some inspirational words from Mary," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "Stanford was the better crew today and was able to take control of the racing early and sustain the leads. Although the team is disappointed with what went down today, I'm confident that we'll get some really good training in over the next two weeks and be ready for the ACC Championship."
