Cal Finishes 8th At NCAA Championships
First Varsity 4 Wins Petite Final
Gainesville, Ga. – The No. 8 California women's rowing team wrapped up the NCAA Championships at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia, on Sunday morning finishing in eighth place overall. It marked the 25th straight top 10 finish for the program.
The Golden Bears' first varsity four won the petite final while the first varsity and second varsity eights placed second and third in their respective petite finals.
Cal's first varsity four got off to a quick start taking a two-seat lead after the first 250 meters. The Bears continued to push and extended their lead to a half boat by the halfway mark. Yale made a push and pulled even with Cal over the third 500 meters. Cal however responded and made a move over the final 500 meters to take the lead and finish in first place.
Cal's second varsity eight went out with the lead pack over the first 250 meters and was in third position just three seats behind first place. Halfway through the race, the Bears maintained third place but just three seats ahead of Brown and Syracuse. Cal made a move and pulled within a half boat of Michigan and Washington over the third 500 meters. The Bears continued to surge and walked back two more seats over Michigan over the final stretch but finished in third place just one second behind the Wolverines.
Cal's first varsity eight got off to a quick start taking an early lead with Washington after the first 250 meters. The Bears maintained their pace and held a three-seat lead over the Huskies in first position at the halfway mark. Washington made a move and eventually took a two-seat lead over Cal in the third 500 meters. The Bears and Huskies battled down the stretch staying within two seats of each other, but Washington ended up holding off Cal who finished second.
"This was by far the fastest NCAA rowing championship in the history of the event," Cal head coach
Al Acosta said. "Hats off to Texas and their world record in the 1st eight. I thought our team stepped up a lot from the ACCs to the NCAAs and ended up doing a great job here. Although we didn't meet our goals of finishing a bit higher as team, I'm incredibly proud of our season and how hard the team raced here in Georgia. I'm grateful to have been able to work with such an incredible senior class. They're an amazing group of young women and they've left quite a legacy. I also have a ton of confidence that the group that's returning next year will train hard over the summer and keep the program moving upward in '27."
